Smith vs. YouTube ryanjerving ryanjerving 1 31 Sep 18, 2011 by courtney.cotter courtney.cotter

  1. Discuss how you and your group worked to stage this Friday's performance. How did you decide upon a video to re-enact, and how did you decide how you would do the re-enactment? How did you assign roles, assemble props, costume, and/or setting (if any), and work out the blocking of the scene? How did you rehearse, assess, tweak, prepare, etc.? And (if you are answering this after the performance), how did it go? After answering these questions, reflect on what your scene illustrated about the nature of play, with reference to the theories of Huizinga and Caillois (or even with reference to the counter-example of Smith's Twilight).

  2. In terms of their approach to play, would you say that the kind of re-enactments that Smith does and the kind of re-enactments that people do on YouTube are basically identical, completely opposed, or intersect in some ways but not others? Support your response with specific examples.
